Opera in the 20th Century
As regular readers know, I am teaching a course this fall on Opera in the 20th Century (that's a link to the class Weblog, if you want to follow along). Here are some links to what we have studied so far:
- October 15: The End of Opera? (Berg's Wozzeck and Puccini's Turandot, from 1925 and 1926, respectively)
- October 8: The Ghosts of Versailles (1991) (the class will also be attending a lecture by John Corigliano tomorrow afternoon)
- October 1: Opera and Nationalism (Bartók's Duke Bluebeard's Castle, 1918, and Janáček's Kát'a Kabanová, 1921)
- September 24: Billy Budd (1951) (the class went to see the Washington National Opera production of the opera, reviewed on ionarts here)
- September 17: Salome (1905)
- September 10: Pelléas et Mélisande (1902)
