  • You may recall my review of the Giselle performed at the Kennedy Center by the Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris last month. Several French news outlets have published articles looking at the success of the tour. This one has a day-by-day account of the tour, including some great pictures of the troupe backstage. Here in Washington, the dancers noted the extremes of temperature between the air-conditioning and the heat wave ("18 °C dedans, 41 dehors"). Rehearsals hosted famous visitors, including Christine Lagarde, director of the IMF, and Martine Aubry, on her way to Chicago. We think the unions are powerful in France, but the article reports that the U.S. unions "demanded that every task that could be carried out by local workers be done only by them." Stage managers, technical workers, makeup artists, costume dressers and so on who had accompanied the tour were all forced to show their American counterparts how to do what they were supposed to do.
