Blogville has had periodic spasms of interest in the music of young composer Jay Greenberg the last couple years. There is an article on another young composer of great promise, Tudor Dominik Maican, in the Washington Post this morning ('A Very Rare and Unusual Talent', December 14) by Katherine Shaver, complete with a beautifully produced video online. I admit that I am not impartial when it comes to this young man, as I have been informally following his progress for several years. His father is a school colleague of mine and a dear, dear man, and I have been glad to hear regular reports of Dominik's accomplishments amid the wearying schedule of all the Saturday trips up to Juilliard. I have read through a few of his compositions for chorus, all of them charming, skilled, and of exceptional interest. You can hear some audio samples of Dominik's compositions at the Post's Web site: D'un Monde à l'Autre -- Prelude for Orchestra, Trio for Flute, Clarinet and Bassoon, and Reflections on James Joyce. We wish him and his family all the best.
