An Index of ionarts Discographies
Continuing my discographies, this is a survey of - hopefully - every extant recorded cycle of Shostakovich's String Quartets. As opposed to the 16 quartets of Beethoven's, where the survey covers nearly six dozen cycles, there are 'only' about 20 such cycles of Shostakovich's String Quartets out. For now, they are neatly bookended by the Borodin Quartet's first and fourth attempt at a cycle. (Raising the question, à la “Can you step in the same river twice?”, whether a string quartet is still the same string quartet 50 years later, with all new members).
The Borodin also raises the question as to what is a complete-enough cycle. Their first cycle, containing quartets 1-13, certainly counts - it was complete at the time and 13 out of 15 ain't bad. The Borodin's digital re-recordings of quartets 2, 3, 7, 8 & 12 for Virgin, however, which may or may not have been intended to be a cycle, don't qualify in my book. (Also, I don't think they are particularly good). Neither do the Hagen Quartet, who recorded six quartets (3, 7, 8 & 4, 11, 14), the excellent Jerusalem Quartet's 6/15 cycle (ionarts review), the St. Petersburg Quartet's first go at it for Sony (1, 2, 4 + 3, 5, 7), or the Rubio Quartet's first attempt at a cycle on Globe from 1996 - 98 (1, 4, 8, 2, 3, 5 + 7, 9, 12)
I am sitting on the data for several new discographic entries under work. Ring cycles, Mahler, Nielsen, Martinů and Beethoven symphony-cycles, as well as Bartók string quartet-cycles. They just take an awful lot of time to research and then put into html-presentable shape and even then they are rarely complete or mistake free. Neither will this one be, and every such post is also a plea to generously inclined readers with more information and knowledge of the subject than I have to lend a helping hand correcting my mistakes or filling data-lacunae. I am explicitly grateful for any such pointers, hinters, and corrections and apologize for any bloomers. Unlike some earlier discographies, this one does intend to be comprehensive. So I am especially grateful if sets that I have missed are pointed out to me. I have not listened to them all, of course, but most. Favorites are indicated with the "ionarts choice" graphic. With several hundred links in this document, there are, despite my best efforts, bound to be some that are broken or misplaced; I am glad about every correction that comes my way about those, too.

shostakovich string quartets cycle complete overview, complete shostakovich string quartets
Hello, I am also an avid lover of Shostakovich Quartets and have been collecting full-cycle recordings. Quatuor Debussy had also recorded all 15 of them on ARION, from 1998 to 2004. (The piano quintet also included, with Claire-Marie Le Guay)
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Taiwan
Thanks much, Decca Chu. Did not see your comment until now. Will look into that!
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Jens
Hello Jens,
ReplyDeleteGlad to see that you got information on the Debussy Quartet. Please don't forget to erase the original mention of only 2 of the CDs.
Did you look into the Quatuor Arthur-LeBlanc that I sent you?
Best wishes,
Nikos
Thanks Nikos; fixed the first part and am looking for your comments re: Quatuor Arthur-LeBlanc right now. Hopefully I can find them.
ReplyDeleteJens,
ReplyDeleteHere they are again.

Thank you for the Survey.
ReplyDeleteIt was a base for my buying and listening to Shostakovich SQ's.
After spending considerable amount of money(ordering most of the discussed sets), time and having a lot of pleasure listening I have to say that performance of the original members Borodin Quartet (Rostislav Dubinsky, Yaroslav Alexandrov, Dmitry Shebalin, Valentin Berlinsky)for me is a definitely a winner.(Chandos Release: 2003)
No other quartet has captured nuances, interconnections of phrases of the instruments, delicate balance and beauty of Shostakovich music.
Not only I was "Surprised by Beauty" but completely emerged in it.
Was lucky to find and listen to LP version of my most loved QT's 1 st, 2nd, 4th and 6th. Performance for live.
Regards.
P.
I am looking to purchase a copy of the Taneyev Quartet set listed above. I have every other set listed here except that one. Does anyone know where I can purchase a copy? I can't find one anywhere.
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Steve
This set is very hard to find. I don’t know why it can’t stay in print. Keep checking Amazon and EBAY
DeleteI was finally able to obtain a copy of the CD set recorded by the Taneyev Quartet and reissued on the Aulos label. The sound quality is fantastic. If you can find a copy, do yourself a favor and get it. In addition, I found another complete CD set of Shostakovich's string quartets not on the list above. It was recorded by a quartet named Quartetto Classico (a quartet from Japan). The set was recorded from 2014-18 and then released in late 2018 on the Creation CI label. The only place I've seen this set for sale is the HMV website in Japan.
ReplyDeleteRegards,
Steve
Using James Leonard as a source is tenuous at best. He hated Carlos Kleiber's Beethoven, called Perlman a 3rd rate violinist and let out a litany of personal insults at Bernstein and the NYPO masquerading as a review.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of masquerading, that is what Leonard is as a critic. One gets the impression that he is a narcissist who revels in personal attacks with not the slightest shred of humility, nor possessed of balanced judgment. He is a hitman passing judgment to make himself feel superior...which is the opposite of the impression he creates. For thin-skinned, nasty Trump fans only where viewers substitutes for facts and reason.
I find the Manhattan set well recorded and the performances as good as any. I come back to it often and I have all the other highly praised sets as well. I think there is room for other performances and interpretations
DeleteThanks for all the comments, Steve, P., Nikos, Unanimous.
ReplyDeleteI'll see to add the cycles that have been suggested. And if I can catch the Taneyev cycle, I'll look into that, too.
