Twist My Arm: Opera from around the World at the Atlas

The Atlas Performing Arts Center on H St. has quickly become an important part of cultural life in Northeast. Now it has added a regular series of high-definition screenings of opera (and ballet) on film to its schedule, in cooperation with Emerging Pictures. The schedule includes some worthwhile movies to see for opera-lovers:
  • Verdi, La Traviata (today at 2 pm), 2007 production from La Scala in Milan with Angela Gheorghiu in the title role
  • Bizet, Carmen (March 17 and 20), 2009 production from La Scala, with Daniel Barenboim conducting and Jonas Kaufmann (Don Jose) and Erwin Schrott (Escamillo)
  • Gounod, Roméo et Juliette (March 24 and 28), 2008 production from the Salzburg Festival, with Rolando Villazon
  • Tchaikovksy, Swan Lake (March 31 and April 3), the classic (updated) Marius Petipa production from the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg
  • Verdi, Rigoletto (April 7 and 10), 2008 production from the Teatro Regio di Parma, with Leo Nucci in the title role
  • Mozart, Don Giovanni (April 14 and 17), 2008 production from the Salzburg Festival, directed by Claus Guth
  • Verdi, Otello (April 21 and 25), 2008 production from the Salzburg Festival, conducted by Riccardo Muti with Aleksandr Antonenko in the title role
  • Verdi, Falstaff (April 28 and May 1), 2009 production from the Opera Royal de Wallonie
  • Verdi, Don Carlo (May 5 and 9), 2008 production from La Scala, with Daniele Gatti conducting
  • Bellini, Norma (May 12 and 15), 2008 production from the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, with Daniela Dessi in the title role
The screen times are always on Wednesdays at 7 pm and on Saturdays at 2 pm. Tickets are $20.
