Olivier Messiaen improvising at La Trinité
on "And the three kings had seen the Star of the Christ
in the East and headed towards Nazareth"
The tune cited in this video, between phantasmagoric improvisational versets, is the Christmas introit Puer natus est nobis, taken from the Liber Usualis perched on Messiaen's music stand. The Feast of the Epiphany on January 6, or Twelfth Night, marks the visit of the astrologers from Persia who greeted the baby born in Bethlehem as a king. Happy Epiphany! And Happy Real Christmas to Alex Ross!
