A brief moment for some momentous sports news. The Detroit Tigers have beaten the Oakland A's in four street games to win the American League pennant. Here is how Mitch Albom at the Detroit Free Press told it. (In a strange coincidence, Uncle Grambo celebrates by leaving Detroit to move to New York.)
As a child, I went to my first baseball game in beloved, old Tiger Stadium, the first of many in that vast, quirky ballpark in Corktown. Now that the Tigers are playing on a new field at Comerica Park, Tiger Stadium is sadly scheduled for demolition, although there are people who want to save it. If reports are to be believed, the demolition could come very soon after the Tigers play in the World Series for the first time since 1984. It looked like both New York teams would check out, but tonight the Mets have some spark back. I am sure that the League would like to have at least one New York team in the World Series, but I think an all-Midwest Series with Detroit and St. Louis would be great.
