I've seen the Japanese film that is the source for After Life - many years ago at the Freer Gallery. A wonderful little jewel of a film and, come to think of it, promising material for an opera! (Although, Charles, you should take away the last sentence [from "assisted by..."], because it is a huge spoiler -- assuming the opera is much like the film.)
