Money, Money, Money

The Baltimore Office Of Promotion and the Arts has announced the $25,000 Janet and Walter Sondheim Prize, to mark the 25th anniversary of the Artscape festival. Walter is one of the nicest and smartest men I've ever had the honor to meet. As president of the Baltimore City School Board in 1954, Mr. Sondheim oversaw the desegregation of the city's public schools and also spearheaded the redevelopment of the Baltimore Inner Harbor, and at 97 years old, he's still very active in the city. Janet Sondheim, who died in 1992, danced with the Denishawn Dancers, the legendary dance troupe founded by Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn.

Jurors for the prize will be Kathy Grayson, gallery director of Deitch Projects in New York, Matthew Higgs, director of White Columns, also in New York, and William Pope.L, a performance artist and faculty member at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.

The prize will be given to a lucky artist living in Maryland, D.C., Northern Virginia, or Southeastern, Pa. Applications and details are available here and here.

  1. Artists submit slides and the 3 jurors choose. There will no doubt be a few thousand submissions. If your chosen, your very very lucky!
