Opera in the 20th Century

As regular readers know, I am teaching a course this fall on Opera in the 20th Century (that's a link to the class Weblog, if you want to follow along). Here are some links to what we have studied so far:

• October 15: The End of Opera? (Berg's Wozzeck and Puccini's Turandot, from 1925 and 1926, respectively)

• October 1: Opera and Nationalism (Bartók's Duke Bluebeard's Castle, 1918, and Janáček's Kát'a Kabanová, 1921)
  
• September 24: Billy Budd (1951) (the class went to see the Washington National Opera production of the opera, reviewed on ionarts here)
  
• September 17: Salome (1905)
  
• September 10: Pelléas et Mélisande (1902)

Those take you to the first post of several on each week's topic, contributed by the students and by me. The Britten and Corigliano events have upset the chronological sequence that I had originally planned, but I was glad to be able to incorporate them into the class.
