Arte Webcasts

For years, I have been lamenting the fact that we cannot get Arte, or a comparable American channel, on televisions on this side of the Atlantic. Now, one can see the channel's most desirous desirable programming, the live broadcasts of operas and concerts from Europe, which is especially useful now during the summer festival season -- by webcast, my new favorite way to spend extra summer hours. In addition to the broadcast of Szymanowski's King Roger, noted earlier this week, add the following to your list of performances to watch:

Concert coming up that are definitely on my list to watch: Magdalena Kožená and Camerata Salzburg (Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, July 10); Mozart's Idomeneo, cond. Marc Minkowski, staging by Olivier Py (Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, July 10); Offenbach's Orphée aux Enfers (Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, July 16).

Add to this the already noted video offerings from Medici TV, which include at the moment, from the Festival de Saint-Denis: Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, with Christophe Rousset, Sabina Puertolas, Vivica Genaux, Les Talens Lyriques; from the same forces, Handel's Il Pianto di Maria and Leo's Salve regina (June 23); Verdi's Requiem, Riccardo Muti, Orchestre national de France (June 8). Also, the Berlin Philharmonic at the Waldbühne (Simon Rattle with Yefim Bronfman, June 21) and, starting on July 17, the broadcasts from the outstanding Verbier Festival.

While I wholeheartedly agree with wanting to see Arte programming in the US and think this is great news, the caveat "desirous programming" is a critical one. I'm in Munich now and last night was treated to 1988's Michael Jackson: Moonwalker from the very same outlet.

You can't win them all.

Good point. It is probably, in some way, to Arte's credit that they include all kinds of programming. I would gladly take MJ, I suppose, to get the Aix-en-Provence Festival.

Also, my confusion of desirous and desirable is an indication that I really should not edit my posts too late at night!
