This Thursday is a special Artful Evening at the Phillips Collection, with programming (November 9, 6 to 8 pm) oriented around the museum's latest exhibit,
The Société Anonyme: Modernism for America (through January 21). The show features 130 rarely seen works from the 20th-century avant-garde, all purchased by Katherine Dreier, some from the
collection she bequeathed to Yale and some she gave to the Phillips. At some point, Swiss pianist Gilles Vonsattel will give a recital. At 6 and 7 pm, there will be presentations on Dada artist Marcel Duchamp, cofounder of the Société Anonyme. At 6:30 pm, there will be a special screening of four experimental short films by artists in the 1920s: Man Ray's
Emak-Bakia (1926), Fernand Léger's
Ballet mécanique (1924), Paul Strand and Charles Sheeler's
Manhatta (1921), and Réné Clair and Francis Picabia's
Entr'Acte (1924).
