À mon chevet: Reservoir 13

À mon chevet is a series of posts featuring a quote from whatever book is on my nightstand at the moment.

book cover
At the butcher's for May Day weekend there was a queue but nothing like there once would have been. Nothing like the queue Martin and Ruth needed to keep the shop going. Martin had been keeping this to himself, although it was becoming obvious and nobody asked. Irene was at the front of the queue telling everyone what she knew about the situation at the Hunters'. She did the cleaning there, and knew a thing or two. You can imagine what it's like for the girl's parents, she said. Having to watch us all down here just getting on with things. Ruth saying, But surely the village couldn't be expected to put life on hold. Austin Cooper came in with copies of the Valley Echo newsletter and laid them on the counter. Ruth wished him congratulations, and he looked confused for a moment before smiling and backing away towards the door. Irene watched him go, and asked if Su Cooper were expecting. Ruth said, Yes, at last, and from the back of the queue Gordon Jackson asked, Would there be any chance of getting served before the baby was born. A breakdown truck came slowly down the narrow street, with a red LDV Pilot van hoisted on the back and a police car following. The van was wrapped in clear plastic. Martin wiped his hands on his apron and stepped outside to watch it pass. Gordon came out with him and lit a cigarette. Martin nodded. That changes things, he said. Fucking breakthrough is that, Gordon said. The swallows returned in number, and could be seen flying in and out through the open doors of the lambing shed at the Jacksons' and the cowsheds over at the Thompsons', and the outbuildings up on the Hunters' land. The well-dressing committee had a difference of opinion about whether to dress the boards at all this year. Under the circumstances. There'd never been a year without a well-dressing that anyone could remember. But there'd never been a year like this. In the end it was agreed to make the dressing but to keep the event low-key. There were sightings of the girl. She was seen by Irene, first, on the footbridge by the tearooms, walking across to the other side. Quite alone she was, Irene said. Her young face turned half away and she wouldn't look me in the eye. Gone before I got to her and I couldn't see which way she went. I knew it was her. The police were told, and they went searching but they found nothing. There were lots of young families in the area that day, a police spokesperson said. But I know it was her, Irene said again. There was rain and the river was high and the hawthorn by the lower meadows came out foaming white. The cow parsley was thick along the footpaths and the shade deepened under the trees. Stock was moved higher up the hills and the tearooms by the millpond opened for the year. In the shed Thompson's men were working on the baler, making sure they'd be ready when the time came for the cut. The grass was high but the weather had been low for days. The rain on the roof was loud and steady. The reservoirs filled.

-- Jon McGregor, Reservoir 13, Chapter 1
Every year I stock up on books that made the Best of the Year cut for my favorite literary critic, James Wood. He has never given me a bum steer, and this author is a most welcome new find for me. After devouring his latest book, Reservoir 13, I am planning to read everything else he has written. This novel opens like a crime thriller: a young girl has gone missing while on a vacation in a picturesque English village. The narrative style is bracing, a sort of stream of consciousness that reads like one of the nosiest, best-informed villagers recording every detail and turn of life in the place. McGregor's eye is minutely trained, streamlined to a laser focus on the lives of young and old in the village, as well as the spiraling rhythms of natural life. At the end of the book, I was genuinely sad not to keep receiving updates on the movements of the foxes and badgers, which plants were coming up and which were fading, how the gardeners were succeeding or failing in their allotments. The old traditions, like the harvest festival and the well-dressing, linger and are renewed. The latter makes a trip to Derbyshire a must at some point in the future.

Dip Your Ears, No. 221 (Barefoot & Beautiful: Allan Pettersson’s Music on BIS)

available at Amazon
Allan Petterson, Concertos for String Orchestra No.1 & 2, Eight Barefoot Songs
Christian Lindberg, Anders Larsson / Nordic CO
BIS 1690 (72:21)

Difficult to say whether the eight—of 24—Barefoot Songs on this BIS disc owe their gorgeousness to Allan Pettersson’s wistful melodies, or Antal Dorati’s sensitive, empathetic (and very extensive) orchestrations.

Who cares. The result is a lushly morbid collection of very fine orchestral songs with a central European romantic heart and a darkly Scandinavian air surrounding them. Anders Larsson’s baritone is nicely suited to this. Every one of those Barefoot Songs makes one wish that Dorati had orchestrated all 24—and then regret that Pettersson only set two dozen of his own Barefoot Poems (of over 100) to music in the first place.

Then again, that might be too heavy a program for an Allan Pettersson disc—which is where the refreshing astringency of the Concerto No.1 for String Orchestra (1949) comes in. Pettersson’s prescription for the performers was: “Expression, great urgency, wildly alternating and striking rhythms take precedence over accuracy of intonation in a dense mass of sonority. So do not reduce the tempo in order to get the details pedantically correct.” The Nordic Chamber Orchestra Sundsvall under Christian Lindberg (a famous trombonist during the daytime) gets both right: urgency and accuracy. Not at breakneck speeds and certainly never pedantic.

Concerto No.2 for String Orchestra wasn’t performed until eleven years after its 1956 composition, perhaps because Pettersson thought it a cutting room floor project, Michael Kube’s fitting description from his liner notes points out that “passages in the 3rd movement seem like parts of a rejected development section from the 1st movement of the earlier Concerto No.1 for String Orchestra.” Throw in overt references to Barber’s Adagio for Strings and you have a touching and tender, albeit episodic work that fits with Petterson’s paean to music from the soul (and by extension against avant-garde excess): “When will the angel come and give back the song to your heart, so simple and so clear that a child will stop crying?”

This is one of the earlier releases of the "Allan Pettersson Project" of the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, conductor Christian Lindberg and the record company BIS. It is as good an entry into the world of Pettersson as there might be, at least for those who have to first get used to Pettersson's grim style. In these works, he is relatively dainty, by his standards.

Forbes Classical CD Of The Week: Alexei Lubimov And C.P.E. Bach Going Off On A Tangent

...The happy mix of smaller and substantial works contributes to displaying that musical universe of C.P.E. Bach’s, which ranges from Scarlatti-like fantasies to proto-Beethovenian sonatas, in all its kaleidoscopic wealth of color. Lubimov’s powerful, juicy playing brings to the instrument and the composer exactly what this music needs in order to take that step from “interesting” to “fascinating”. Without this individualistic, emotional and original treatment, the music might never be truly discovered. Why this album, recorded in 2008, is appearing only now, three years after the C.P.E. Bach anniversary in 2014, will remain ECM’s secret....

Forbes Classical CD Of The Month: Festive Telemann Cantatas

...Top of that list was the WQXR-choice of the Telemann Festive Reformation Cantatas by a small local German chorus on the tiny Christopherus label. It’s just the sort of rare, easy-to-overlook gem – and the act of pointing to such a recording and bringing it to the awareness of a slightly bigger audience is really the raison d’être of such lists. I immediately listened to a short sample and was hooked. Then I got the CD and fell in love…

Forbes Classical CD of the Month: The Jazzy Space Chicken Baroque Hypersuite

...And what reaction exactly is that? For one it’s the unanimous declaration that this CD would be an excellent record to play in the background at just about any occasion… followed – and that’s the kicker – by intent listening. Foreground Muzak? Background sublimity? “The ‘Hypersuites’” are acoustic remixes of baroque pieces”, explains the booklet. “Improvisation and variation are baroque techniques. Running separate pieces together into a suite for some special occasion was a common practice. Pianist and composer Marina Baranova builds on these ideas in the ‘Hypersuites’: Her ‘mixed tapes’ are recompositions of pieces by Couperin, Bach, Rameau and Handel. She thus creates a new and coherent work of art – Virtuoso Baroque Music of the 21st Century.”…

The folksiness of Scandinavian traditional music has all the associative ingratiating quality of the smell of pine cones, fresh straw and moonshine, but none of hog pen and swamp. Forbes Review: Visiting Nazgûl - An Evening Of Late Schumann And Darker Schubert

...When I had to review a painstakingly lovely recording of the Well-Tempered Clavier some months ago, I searched for a foil. I found it in the darkly individualistic rendition of Dina Ugorskaja’s recent release – which ended up a Classical CD of the Week (Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier: Forget-Me-Nots And Intimations Of Mortality). So when I found out that Dina Ugorskaja played a recital in Munich’s Herkulessaal (substituting on short notice for Vardan Mamikonian; the pianist, not the saint), while I was in Bavaria’s capital – and with a tantalizing program of late Schumann and Scriabin at that – it was an easy and obvious decision to go and check out the recital the “Classics before 8PM” series.

After tantalizing late Schumann and sublime Scriabin, I thought of late Franz Schubert – namely the Piano Sonata in B-flat major, D 960 – as an extended encore… but not so! This turned out not only to be the longest piece on the program but also its emotional center. Dina Ugorskaja’s playing in general and in this first movement in particular, evokes and underscores a discomfiture among any listeners who think they know the work. No less here: Where there is a little oddity among the notes, it got explored with great curiosity. Where there’s a seldom noticed tension between lines, it got investigated. Amid such details, the pianist derailed Schubert’s sonata from conventions and re-established it as something fearsomely dark…

Forbes Classical CD of the Month: Les Troyens From Strasbourg With Joyce DiDonato

...It’s a long slog in the opera house and it’s a long slog if you do a dedicated sit-and-listen at home. But a bottle of good wine helps. And this recording, I think, helps, too. I certainly found myself involved by John Nelsons’ dramatic, vivid conducting, by the orchestra’s nuanced performance and by the singers’ interpretation and voices. With a few exceptions, the voices are lighter and more nimble than one is used to from these kinds of operas… and as a result increasingly responsive to a more subtle interpretation of the drama around them. Comic-operatic hyper-drama is out, as are overt, grand gestures (of the vocal type but, as the included DVD shows, also of the physical kind.) That’s refreshing and it does justice to the (thankfully) changing taste in operatic singing which, even in unrealistic, dramatically unconvincing operas, demands a greater amount of realism and restraint and less of the arm-waving and fist-shaking that used to be common – with all the emotion-motoric refinement of an anguished semaphore – on stages throughout the world…

Forbes Classical CD Of The Week: Zeitgeist And The Symphony -- A Viennese Treasure

Few symphonies begin as entrancingly delicate and yet as immediately enveloping as Franz Schmidt’s Second. Almost like a fireside reverie might sound, if Richard Strauss had written it… except we know how such a Straussian Fireside Reverie actually sounds, because such a symphonic interlude by that name from Richard Strauss’ opera Intermezzo exists and it is very happily coupled on this disc with Schmidt’s Symphony: A happy match then, of a neglected minor piece by a major composer and a major piece by a neglected minor composer. No. Franz Schmidt (1874 – 1939) is not a minor composer, for all the neglect that he has received. He was merely not in tune with the Zeitgeist when he composed his gorgeous music… and not famous enough so as to be immune to not being in tune with the Zeitgeist (see: Strauss, Richard)...

Latest on Forbes: This is Your Brain on Parsifal; A Viennese Clunker from Alvis Hermanis

Parsifal At The Vienna State Opera: A Set In Lieu Of A Production

Parsifal around Easter is a lovely tradition. Especially when enjoyed with a good friend. But not every production is worth keeping up with that tradition.

Indeed, architect Otto Wagner is cannibalized for all the sets, whether it’s a more or less straight reproduction of the St. Leopold church up above the Steinhof area or bastardizations of other Otto Wagner visuals. The Karlsplatz subway station entry is emblazoned not with its own name but with the typographic decoration “Die Zeit” which Wagner designed for the telegraph office of the former Viennese newspaper of that name. Why? Because “Die Zeit” is mentioned twice in the libretto in that act. That’s all the depth there’s to it. Catch it if you can; if not, you’re no worse off for it.

Complete Beethoven Sonata Survey on ionarts

Llŷr Williams
2014 - 2017 - Signum

Recorded live between 2014 and 2017 as part of a nine-recital Beethoven cycle at the Wigmore Hall. The cycle (apparently or roughly?) keeps the order of the sonatas in the recitals, spans 12 discs and includes several solo piano pieces beyond the 32 sonatas.

This listing of all Beethoven Sonata Cycles will continue as more sets reach completion or as I find more information about sets already completed.* There are certainly plenty sets under way that should or may reach completion soon: Among them Angela Hewitt (Hyperion), Igor Tchetuev (Caro Mitis), Jonathan Biss (Onyx), Akihiro Sakiya (DPIC Entertainment), Martin Roscoe (Deux-Elles), James Brawn (MSR), Paavali Jumppanen (Ondine) [Completed & Added], Yusuke Kikuchi (Triton) [Completed & Added] et al. I will also add a selection of historically important attempted cycles that were never finished but include >20 >9 sonatas. That would add Rudolf Serkin (CBS, 10 sonatas missing), Bruce Hungerford (Vanguard / Piano Classics, also 10 sonatas missing), Emil Gilels (DG, opp.2/1, 14/1, 54, 78, 111), and Glenn Gould (CBS/Sony, opp.7, 22, 49, 53, 79, 81a, 90 missing, op.106 separate, opp.7 [partly], 49/1, 101 available on CBC recordings). There are seemingly abandoned cycles that will not be included, such as those of  Giovanni Belluci,  Bruno Leonardo Gelber,  Yoshihiro Kondo, or  Per Tengstrand. Finally there are cycles that are unworthy of discussion or outright fraudulent, i.e. not actual piano playing and/or of excrutiating quality and/or cobbled together from other performances, that will also not be included. Most famously Joyce Hatto, but apparently also Vladimir Morrone, Giancarlo Andretti, Alicja Kot, and Claudio Colombo.**

* If you count, as I did, Backhaus II and Arrau II as complete, despite one and two (respectively) missing sonatas. I do not count Walter Gieseking (tapes of 4, 5, 7, 20, 22 for a radio cycle are lost, a studio cycle for EMI was missing seven sonatas when he died), Wilhelm Kempff "0" (Polydor, opp.2/3, 22, 27/1, 28, 31/2, 101 missing).

If you have additional information about recording dates, availability, cover art -- or corrections and additions -- your input is much appreciated.

This survey is meant to list all complete sets of Beethoven's Piano Sonatas and their availability in different markets, not to review them. If you are looking for recent releases, like the Ponelle-filmed cycle of Barenboim's Beethoven Sonatas, or his "Beethoven for All" set, they are included with the sets of which they are actually re-releases.
